Theater Arts and Makers

As I’ve watched school play productions over the years, I have often wondered about my connection to this craft as a maker. It seemed a perfect place to play a role, so to speak, but I have never been involved. It is usually the art department that does work in this area, or even some outsourcing to the school maintenance department. But with a maker space and wood shop onsite there is no better location or resources for this endeavor. With set pieces to be designed and built, and props to create, it surely seems like a nice fit for a group of student makers.

This year, we get to do just that. As part of the Musical Tech team that puts on the spring musical, I am eager to dive in with the rest of the crew. My role is to help a small band of students, called the Run Crew, to build the set pieces and props for this year’s musical production.
